You ever wonder what those random stickers meant on your fruits and veggies? Yeh me too. They are actually called PLU; price lookup number…in other words they tell you if your food is organically grown, genetically modified or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides. Most stickers have 4-5 numbers on them and those are what you need to pay the most attention to. If there are only four numbers in the PLU, this means that the produce was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides. Most of these foods will also start with the number 4. If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with 8, this tells you that the item is a genetically modified fruit or vegetable aka the giant steroid strawberries looking like they got six packs. And if there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with 9, this tells you that the produce was grown organically and is not genetically modified.
Ever since I found out this information I started to notice that during my grocery trips most of my time is spent in the produce section…reading! Steer clear and take heed. You really do not know what you are eating!!
